Bexhill was slow to get on the resort bandwagon and it wasn't until the 1880's when Lord De La Ware built Victorian terrace houses on the land that he owned between Bexhill and the sea. The main feature of Bexhill-on-Sea is the De La Ware Pavilion. Built in 1935 it was Bexhill's
answer to the piers of the other resorts. The Pavilion is one of the worlds finest examples of 'modernist' architecture and was designed by Erich Mendelsohn in 1934. It was the first major building in this country to be constructed with a welded steel frame. With long, low lines and glassed in staircase it dominates the sea front. In the early 1900's, at Whitsun, motor races and speed trials took place along the
seafront. Now, for 2 days each year in early May (Bank Holiday Sunday & Monday) Bexhill-on-Sea holds a motoring festival. |
