Friday and Saturday are Lichfield’s market days. There is a farmer’s market once a month on a Thursday.

Much of the city centre is now pedestrianised, so don’t forget to check out the Market Square and Dr. Sam’s museum.

There is still a Sunday service in St. Mary’s but there is also a Heritage centre upstairs where you can learn more about the history of Lichfield. You might be able to get a guide to take you up into the spire loft to enjoy a look over the roof tops of Lichfield. When back on terra-firma, look for the plaques, on the wall in the church, they commemorate martyrs burnt at the stake in Lichfield Market Square.

Dam Street, a typical narrow street with quaint old shops also has Brook House on the right. A plaque over the door explains that this is where Colonel Brook was killed during the English Civil War.

Take a peek down Quonians Lane (it sounds as if it has come straight out of Harry Potter), at the end is a workshop that produces wood and stone carvings, many for cathedral maintenance. You could just imagine them working on the halls and staircases of Hogwarts!

Have you still got your sandwiches and bottle of mineral water? Then towards the end of Dam Street is Minster Pool, a rather nice place to eat, if the sun is shining.

Summary?

I spent a couple of hours in Lichfield – it wasn’t nearly long enough.
