Lichfield - the Ladies of the Vale

The Romans built Letocetum in the 1st century AD, a fort 2 miles to the south of Lichfield, at the crossroads of Watling Street and Ryknild Street.

Lichfield was a stronghold for Royalists and suffered during the English Civil War due to its strategic position between north and south. The Cathedral was desecrated in 1643 and bombarded it in 1646 when the central spire collapsed.

Dr. Samuel Johnson was born on the 18th September 1709 in Breadmarket Street., Lichfield

There is an air of unspoilt charm about the place, a certain something that suggests a quiet comfort in being just a little off the main tourist trap routes.

Enjoy Lichfield, it is a little gem just off the tourist routes!
