Brading Village

Brading

Between Ryde and Sandown, unfortunately this delightful little village is on the main road (A3055). Brading was once a harbour.  As recently as the 1870s small ships were still sailing up the Yar at high tide.

Brading has been the home of the Oglander family (an important component of the islands history) for the last 800+ years and St. Mary's church, the oldest on the island, in the High Street has many monuments to the family. They have owned Nunwell Manor since the reign of Henry I and Charles I was a guest - they have changed the sheets since then!

Brading was given a definitive charter by Edward VI.

Nearby at Morton Farm is possibly the finest Roman villa of the eight discovered on the island, the mosaics are of particular interest.
