Ifield Conservation Area

Crawley west sussex england crawley ukSt. Margarets Church Ifield

Ifield village was recorded in the Doomsday Book of 1086 and the village still has many timber-beamed properties. There is also the 12th Century St. Margaret's Church and a 16th century coach house. Hiding behind the pub and alongside the churchyard is the Ifield Barn theatre, a home for excellent amateur productions.

Ifield Mill

About a mile up the road from the church is Ifield Mill, which is a restored weather boarded corn mill overlooking the Mill Pond. It is open every Sunday from May to September.

The Mill Pond is only half the original pond, the other half is across the railway line. Both halves of the Mill Pond, (joined by a tunnel which is not for human visitors) offer an excellent opportunity to study local wildlife. Heron and Great Crested Grebe reside and in the evening the shriek of mink hunting their prey may be heard.

St. Nicholas’s Church

Crawley west sussex st. nicholas's saxon church worth crawley west sussex england

One of the finest Saxon churches (AD 950) in England. The main features remain intact, notably the magnificent chancel and two transeptual arches. Beneath the stone floor a time capsule has been buried containing a wealth of information about the church and life in modern Crawley.
